Canada’s Bouchard through to Wimbledon quarter-finals with win over Cornet

By The Canadian Press

LONDON – Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard is through to the quarter-finals of Wimbledon after defeating France’s Alize Cornet 7-6 (5), 7-5.

Bouchard trailed Cornet 4-2 and 5-3 in the second set, but battled and won four straight games back to keep her string of Grand Slam quarter-final appearances intact.

Bouchard, the 13th seed from Westmount, Que., advanced to the semifinals at the Australian Open and French Open earlier this year.

Cornet advanced to the fourth-round match after upsetting top seed Serena Williams on the weekend.

Bouchard is the first Canadian in the Open era to advance to the quarter-finals. She will next face the winner of a match between Maria Sharapova and Angelique Kerber.

Sharapova defeated Bouchard in the French Open semis.

The 20-year-old Bouchard, a former junior champion at Wimbledon, is making her second appearance at the All England Club after reaching the third round in 2013.

Note to readers: This is a corrected story. A previous version had Bouchard trailing 5-2 in the second set.
