List of evacuees grows as slug of storm runoff surges through Manitoba

BRANDON – A mandatory evacuation order has been issued for 16 permanent homes and more than 100 seasonal cottages at a location on the south end of Lake Manitoba.
The Rural Municipality of Portage la Prairie warned property owners at Delta Beach late Sunday that part of the Portage diversion may burst and flood the marsh behind their homes.
Crews have been shoring up the east side of the outlet, which transfers excess water from the Assiniboine River into the lake.
In Manitoba’s Interlake region, about 20 protesters have forced a shutdown on work to start diverting water from some of the province’s swollen waterways.
Derrick Gould, a councillor at the Fairford First Nation, says they’re upset they had not been consulted on the opening of the Lake St. Martin diversion.
Gould says many of them want compensation for damage caused by the diversion, while some are still waiting on money promised after the devastating 2011 flood.
