Prom night murder suspect makes court appearance

OTTAWA — An 18-year-old Ottawa man made his first court appearance Saturday, facing second degree murder charges related to a prom night stabbing in downtown Ottawa.

Devnontay Hackett, 18, appeared briefly by video at the Elgin Street Courthouse Saturday morning, accused of murdering St. Patrick’s High School student Brandon Volpi.

Volpi, 18, was stabbed after an altercation outside Les Suites Hotel in downtown Ottawa during prom celebrations early on June 7, and later died in hospital.

Devontay Hackett, 18, was arrested in Toronto Friday afternoon, after police had issued a Canada-wide warrant for his arrest shortly after the murder.

He will be back in court on July 21.
