More Illegal guns seized in Ottawa in 2014 than ever before

OTTAWA – There are more guns on our streets than ever before.

Ottawa police have seized 43 firearms this year, surpassing the 36 guns confiscated in 2013 and it’s only August.

Police said the guns and firearms that were seized were used for criminal purposes.

Last year there were 30 shootings in the city, while there have already been 25 in 2014 so far.

Detective Chris O’Brien said it is a concerning trend.

“Once one person in the criminal element gets a firearm, that sort of drives the others that don’t have guns to want to aquire guns so that they can maintain their competitiveness with their rivals” said O’Brien.

Police have been trying to combat the surge of guns through various initiatives including the Pistols for Pixels program, but O’Brien said police still need the public’s help.

If you know someone who has an illegal firearm, you can report it to police anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
