Woman’s body found in Rideau River now suspicious death investigation

OTTAWA — A body has been pulled from the Rideau River, near Carleton University, and the Major Crime Unit has been called in to handle the case.
A passer-by called police after seeing saw the woman’s body, which appeared to be naked, in the river shortly before 11 a.m. on Tuesday. The body was pulled to shore on the Vincent Massey Park side of the river, and recovered by Ottawa Police.
The decision was made to call in the Major Crime Unit because it’s not immediately clear how the woman died and ended up in the river.
“Until we get specifics on the…cause of death, Major Crime will always be involved in any death outside of the hospital,” said Cst. Chuck Benoit, Ottawa Police.
“Any death outside of a hospital is considered suspicious until deemed otherwise,” he explained.
The woman has not yet been identified and police have not released her approximate age.
A post-mortem is expected to provide more information about what happened to the woman, but police didn’t yet know when it will be conducted.
