OTTAWA – The Transportation Safety Board will provide an update on their investigation into the Barrhaven bus crash Wednesday morning. The update is expected at 11 a.m.
The crash between OC Transpo bus 76 and a Via Rail train killed six people and left over two dozen hurt last September at Fallowfield Station.
The board earlier disclosed that the crossing had the highest level of protection available and that warning signals were activated 47 seconds prior to the collision. The train was travelling well below the speed limit, with the crew applying its emergency brakes two seconds before the crash.
Investigators have sifted through data recorders on both the locomotive and the double decker bus, doing a detailed mechanical and physical inspection on the bus.
The board was also probing human error factors; anything that could have affected the drivers performance, including visual obstructions of the signals and the alignment of the crossing itself.
The city has already acted on early recommendations from the board to increase visibility at the crossing by cutting back shrubs, installing new and larger crossing signs and lowering the speed limit on the transitway from 60km/h to 50km/h.
