Watson pledges LRT phase two as top priority, Maguire disagrees

OTTAWA – Phase two of the light rail transit system will be one of Jim Watson’s top priorities if he is re-elected as mayor in October.
Watson says he would like to see the city’s LRT extended to the east at Place d’Orleans and potentially south to the Airport, depending on the cost. Watson has also previously proposed a bus rapid transit system to the west to serve Kanata, west of Bayshore.
In addition to his LRT promise, Watson announced the city has reached the 60 per cent mark of downtown tunnel excavation for the Confederation Line.
Mike Maguire, the mayors main competition in the race, opposes phase two of LRT. Maguire has said it would be too expensive, though he hasn’t yet released his full plan.
The $2.1-billion Confederation is scheduled to be fully operational by 2018.
