Ride-sharing app Uber launches in Ottawa

OTTAWA – An alternative to the classic taxi cab has launched its Ottawa website.

Uber’s Ottawa site went live Wednesday at 10 a.m.

Uber operates in 205 cities around the world, and Ottawa is apparently an appealing market for the ride-sharing service.

The company uses an mobile app instead of dispatchers; people register to share their car and offer rides to people with credit card the only payment option. The fare is based on time and distance.

Uber calls itself a technology company and not a taxi company, but the City of Ottawa has said Uber must follow taxi rules, including driving licensed cabs.
