Uber expands service into Gatineau

OTTAWA – Uber has quietly expanded its Ottawa service into Gatineau on a trial basis.

Last Friday, the ride-sharing company began allowing a group of drivers in the capital to pick up customers on the other side of the river, as long as they are going to a destination in Ottawa.

“This undertaking will help facilitate riders returning to Ottawa from Gatineau,” says Uber spokesperson Xavier Van Chau, in a written statement.

Uber is illegal in the province of Quebec but Van Chau says Uber will continue to expand.

Uber aspires to be in every city around the world where current transportation options fall short of meeting consumer and driver demand,” says Van Chau.

Uber launched in Ottawa last fall and bylaw officers routinely carry out sting operations to ticket drivers.
