HUNTINGTON STATION, N.Y. – Authorities say a Suffolk County police officer shot and wounded while on duty is in serious but stable condition.
Officials say Officer Mark Collins was shot just before midnight Wednesday while confronting a suspect who fled a traffic stop in Huntington Station.
Police says a suspect was arrested nearby about an hour after the shooting. He was one of four people in the vehicle that was stopped for a traffic violation.
Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone says Collins is in serious condition and remains in a medically induced coma in the intensive care unit of Stony Brook University Hospital. He was shot once in the neck and once in the hip.
Bellone says Collins was “speaking and able to communicate” when he arrived at the hospital.
The officer was in plain clothes and driving an unmarked vehicle when he stopped the car.
Collins is a 12-year veteran assigned to the Gang Unit in the Second Precinct.
