OTTAWA – Centretown councillor Catherine McKenney witnessed the unexpected arrival of her granddaughter early Thursday morning.
McKenney’s daughter, Tricia McLaughlin, went into labour suddenly and was in the middle of giving birth when paramedics arrived.
McKenney tells 1310news she got a call from her daughter around 11: 45 p.m., and cycled to her house with the intention of babysitting her other granddaughter.
Instead, McKenney ended up coaching her through the birth.
“I was trying to guide them [paramedics] into the house, when I heard her yell, “the baby is here,'” says McKenney. “I was pretty proud of my daughter.”
McKenney says one of the paramedics was a trainee, while the other had only been on the job for a year.
With the help of paramedics, McLaughlin welcomed a healthy baby girl named Mya into the family.
McKenney says Mya is 8 lb. 1oz, and was crying right away.
“She has a beautiful little round head, and you can tell she didn’t spend a lot of time in the birth canal,” laughs McKenney.
“It was a very joyous thing. But it was shocking and it’s hard to believe it all happened.”
