Muslim woman finds hate note in mailbox

OTTAWA–An Ottawa Muslim woman is shaken after someone stuffed a hateful note in the mailbox outside her downtown home.

The university student feels “watched” and “unsafe”

Eren Cervantes-Altamirano has lived in Ottawa for three years, working on a masters at Carelton University.
It’s been a positive experience until yesterday’s discovery of a nasty note stuffed in her mailbox outside her downtown home.

It read “Canada is no place for immigrants or terrorists. Go back home.”
She says it’s hard to shake those feelings of not being safe — and worrying for her friends too

“A lot of the friends that I have in Ottawa are people of colour, Muslims, visible Muslims — women that wear hijabs, women that wear niqab. So it knocks close to home,” she said.

Three Muslim women were targets in two separate attacks in Toronto this week — including 2 wearing hijabs who were accosted on a subway train last night by two men and a woman.

A witness pulled the trains emergency alarm and the attackers fled.

Police in Peterborough continue to probe the arson at that community’s mosque that caused $80,000 damage.
