Snow on windshield could cost you

OTTAWA — Driving to work before getting all the snow of your car could cost you $110.
With the winter’s first snowfall in Ottawa Tuesday come the annual reminders about clearing your car before you head out on the road.
Ottawa Police Sergeant Mark Gatien was on the roads Tuesday morning as drivers adjusted to the winter conditions.
“I have seen a few cars go by where they just throw the wipers on and then start driving away, and create a snowstorm behind them,” Sergeant Gatien told 1310 NEWS. “We have to stop them and ask them ‘please clear your windshield off, because you’re blinding the people behind you with the snow.”
The fine for not clearing your vehicle is $110.
Along with the snow and frost, police stress the importance of clearing away ice build-up on your vehicle.
“We’ve seen that stuff go right through windshields,” said Sergeant Gatien, speaking about those sheets of ice coming loose. “We’ve seen fatalities because it goes through windshields. People don’t understand how dangerous it is until they actually see it first-hand, or it happens to a family member or friend.”
Ice flying off your vehicle and hitting someone could mean a charge of operating an unsafe vehicle, or even dangerous driving.
