OTTAWA – The body that studied the haunting legacy of Canada’s residential schools will release its massive final report Tuesday to members of a class-action settlement that led to its creation.
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission has already unveiled 94 recommendations stemming from its six-year investigation.
And Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has already taken steps to live up to one of the recommendations — the launch of a national public inquiry examining the phenomenon of missing and murdered aboriginal women.
Trudeau is expected to make a statement today once the commission releases the report.
One of the commission’s key findings, released as part of a summary in June, was that the residential school system facilitated nothing short of “cultural genocide.”
Justice Murray Sinclair, who led the commission’s investigation, says he’s hopeful there will be a broad discussion about the terms of reference for the missing and murdered women inquiry so it can explore whether systemic issues are at play.
Each copy of today’s report is estimated to weigh about 25 pounds.
