Groundhog Day predictions mixed

By News staff

It’s Groundhog Day!

Every year, Ontario’s Wiarton Willie, Nova Scotia’s Shubenacadie Sam, Alberta’s Balzac Billy and Pennsylvania’s Punxsutawney Phil make their predictions on how much longer winter will stick around — based on whether or not they see their shadows.

If a shadow is seen, the furry forecasters retreat into their den preparing for another six weeks of winter. If no shadow is spotted, then spring-like conditions are just around the corner.

The predictions varied this year:

Punxsutawney Phil also predicted an early spring, drawing cheers and whistles from the crowd.

Every year, Groundhog Day is celebrated on February 2.
