Elderly man arrested after arson investigation

OTTAWA – An elderly man has been arrested in connection to an arson investigation Sunday.

Just after 9 a.m., a 911 caller reported hearing an explosion at the back of the home at 1248 Walkley Rd., that sits on the corner of Walkley and Banff Ave, said Ottawa Fire Public Information Officer Danielle Cardinal.

A man was seen leaving the scene in a van.

Then, around 12:45 p.m., emergency crews were called to the 4100 block of Leitrim Road where a home was on fire.

There were no injuries in either fire, but in both cases, there was substantial damage to the homes.

It was determined that both fires were related.

Later Sunday afternoon, police tracked down the van seen leaving the scene on the Walkley Road fire at Highway 417 and Pinecrest Road. A 78-year-old man was arrested, though no charges have been laid.
