Report into Gatineau skydiving accident cites lack of training, problems with reserve chute

GATINEAU – A nine-month investigation into a skydiving accident that injured two people in Gatineau has found the reserve chute didn’t deploy properly and the instructor did not have adequate training.

On July 8, 2015, skydiving instructor Caroline Breton, 22, and her 45-year-old male student suffered serious injuries during a tandem jump.

According to the CBC, Quebec workplace safety investigators found there was a problem when the reserve parachute was deployed. Breton was unable to regain control, and the pair crashed to the ground.

The report also cites a lack of training on emergency measures to prevent uncontrolled landings involving reserve chutes — calling it an industry-wide problem.
