Another person is facing charges in connection with an ongoing case into the disappearance and death of a Smiths Falls man.
Robbie Thomson, who would now be 37, was reported missing to police Oct. 19, 2023. In November 2025, police found human remains identified as Thompson at a property in Lanark County off Highway 15.
Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said on April 21 that Mark Fenton, 42, was arrested and charged with accessory after the fact to murder. He remains in custody and is expected in court on Wednesday.
He is the fourth person to be arrested; police have also charged Christopher Fenton, 48, Erin Mackie, 40, both from Montague Township and Joshua Belfiori, 34, from Kingston, with one count of first-degree murder each.
OPP east region media relations officer Erin Cranton told CityNews in an email that the relationship between the accused will not be released.
In October 2025, police executed a search warrant at a home on Kelly Jordan Road near Smiths Falls, where Thompson’s remains were found. Police have continued their presence at the property, gathering evidence in the case.
Craton detailed that the property is about 40 acres in size.
In the most recent update, officials said they will still be active at the property as the investigation is ongoing.
“As the investigation is ongoing, and to avoid compromising investigative processes, the OPP is unable to provide further specifics regarding police actions or activities taking place on or in relation to the property at this time,” Cranton said.
In several instances, police carried out searches for Thomson in connection with another missing persons case from the area, Lawrence Bertrim, who would now be 44.
“These cases, even that of Robbie Thomson, remain ongoing investigations,” Craton detailed. “While we do not believe they are directly connected, we know some of the individuals may have known each other or shared social circles.”
