Smiths Falls gym steps up to help those left homeless by row house fire

SMITHS FALLS, Ont. – A gym in Smiths Falls has stepped up to help those left homeless by fire.

Fire crews were called to a row house complex on Robinson Street just before 11:30 p.m. Friday, where a unit had caught fire.

While there were no injuries, the complex was completely destroyed by the time the fire was brought under control. That’s left 14 people from eight families homeless.

Neil Piepher of Zendragon Gym tells 1310 NEWS they’re working with Victims Services of Lanark County, the Red Cross and the Salvation Army to collect items.

“Toiletries, food, clothing, bedding, just about anything,” Piepher says. ” Kids toys, diapers, baby food.”

Meantime, at a barbecue fundraiser over the weekend, the gym raised around $2,800, plus $1,300 in gift cards for the families.

You can drop off donations at the gym or Salvation Army on Chambers Street.

A GoFundMe page has also been set up; click here to donate.
