OPP cracking down on unsafe drivers over Canada Day long weekend

Enjoy your Canada Day long weekend, and enjoy it safely. That’s the message from Ontario provincial police, who hope not to see a repeat of last weekend when eight people were killed in highway crashes.
Major corridors — Highways 416, 417 and 401 will see a visible OPP presence to try to make the long weekend trip safer.
As with every long weekend, the OPP will target distracted, impaired and aggressive drivers.
“We don’t want to see a repeat of what we saw this past weekend […] absolute tragedy,” OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt told 1310 NEWS.
Last weekend, eight people were killed in four separate crashes on OPP-patrolled roads, including four people in a horrific crash on Highway 400 in Toronto.
A motorcyclist and his passenger also died in a separate crash.
So far this year, 128 people have been killed on provincial roads.
Marine units will also be out, making sure boaters are abiding by the rules of the water.
The watchful eye of the law doesn’t end at the province’s borders — Safety Without Borders is a traffic enforcement initiative between OPP, the Surete du Quebec, and state police in New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.
