uOttawa condemns lewd student pub crawl

OTTAWA — The University of Ottawa has issued a statement against a pub crawl that encourages public nudity and sexual acts.

The annual pub crawl, “Vet’s Tour,” awards points to teams for completing tasks on a list. French-language student newspaper La Rotonde reports, tasks in previous years have ranged from teammates carrying each other on their shoulders, to committing sexual acts. Point values increase when participants are in their underwear, and increase even more when naked, the newspaper reports.

The paper says many of the event’s participants are active in student politics.

“The University of Ottawa strongly condemns a recent event at which some students were encouraged to behave disgracefully,” the school writes in a statement posted on its website. The school goes on to say it, “denounces any behaviour that runs counter to the values and policies the University has implemented to prevent sexual violence on campus.”

The statement reminds students of resources available for victims of sexual violence, and reiterates its zero tolerance policy, but does not say anything about whether it plans to hand out punishments connected to the pub crawl.
