Rats roaming the capital?

OTTAWA — Complaints of rats roaming the nation’s capital’s streets and parks have two city councillors searching for answers.
Both Councillor Mathieu Fleury and Councillor Allan Hubley want to know whether there has in fact been an increase in the rat population and what city staff are doing to control the population.
“It’s a follow up from a few years ago when we started doing work in sewers and we found there were a lot of rats in the sewers,” said Councillor Allan Hubley.
The Kanata councillor tells 1310 NEWS he wonders whether an increase in rat sightings is related to a change in provincial rules six years ago which banned certain pesticides.
“They used to [kill rats with] a lot with different chemicals. They could put traps into the sewers, that would then control the population of the rats.

Ottawa was named the second-most “ratty city” in Ontario by a pest control company, based on the number of service calls it got in 2016.
