OTTAWA – Emergency crews spent much of Monday on the scene of a two-alarm blaze in the east end.
Crews responded to a 17-storey apartment building at 1244 Donald St. around 10:30 a.m., after numerous 911 calls and reports of flames in an electrical panel.
Crews arrived to find visible flames on the 10th floor and heavy smoke on the upper floors, and people retreating to their balconies.
A working fire was confirmed at 10:36 a.m., with fire present on both the ninth and 10th floors.
In all, crews evacuated floors nine through 17. Those stranded on their balconies were rescued by fire crews, using a fire ladder.
The evacuated residents were sheltered in an OC Transpo bus, and in a neighbouring building at 1240 Donald St.
The Canadian Red Cross and Salvation Army also responded to the scene.
The nine affected floors were deemed inhabitable.
