Rideau High School to close permanently

OTTAWA – Despite hours of meetings that heard emotional pleas from parents, students and community leaders to save their school, the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board has voted to close Rideau High School.

At a special board meeting Tuesday night, trustees voted in favour of the plan to close the school, permanently, in June at the end of this school year.

The closure is part of a plan to shed excess pupil spaces within the board; trustees approved the closure of six west-end elementary and middle schools, last week.

Students from Rideau High School will transfer to Gloucester High School this September. The school board says it will support the transition to Gloucester High, less than five kilometres away, by providing transportation to Rideau High School students regardless of eligibility requirements.

As part of the transition, school board staff will also look at whether Gloucester High School should be re-named.
