OTTAWA — Heavy rainfall expected to overwhelm the already-saturated ground has prompted conservation officials to issue a flood warning for areas along the Rideau River.
The hardest-hit properties are expected to include those between Kars and Kemptville, where access road flooding is expected by midday Thursday. Areas of Old Ottawa South are expected to see flooding, along Belmont Drive and Rideau River Drive, as well as Windsor Park and Brantwood Park.
Ottawa will receive up to 40 millimetres of rain by Thursday night, falling on ground too saturated to absorb more precipitation.
“We’ve already had about 28 millimetres of rain; the average is 63 (for the month of April),” said Jill Taylor, 1310 NEWS meteorologist. “We still have a lot of April to go, so we’ll likely be over that average rainfall for the month of April.”

Outside the city, the Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority has issued a flood watch for Dalhousie Lake and smaller tributaries. It urged residents in low-lying areas, especially those susceptible to past flooding, to take precautions to protect their property, including checking their sump pumps are in good working condition and securing items that might float away.
