OTTAWA — The trial for Basil Borutski is expected to get underway today.
The 58-year-old was charged after three woman were murdered in Renfrew County back in September of 2015.
One local group hopes the focus remains on the victims over the course of the next 16 weeks.
Joanne Brooks with the Women’s Sexual Assault Centre in Renfrew says this trial will be re-traumatizing for the families of Anastasia Kuzyk, Nathalie Warmerdam and Carol Culleton.
“I just totally get the sense that while the trial is going on, and that’s about the accused, that there are many many people that want to honour and remember the women who were murdered,” she explains.
Brooks’ organization is planning a gathering in Eganville Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., at the Bonnechere Union Public Library.
At the meeting, she wants to discuss what the community can do to show support for women who deal with abuse, while this trial continues.
“And also to keep in our focus, women who still live with violence,” Brooks adds.
She expects there could also be advocates fighting violence against women outside of the courthouse on Monday.
