OTTAWA — As many of us get ready to travel or host guests this Thanksgiving, police will spend the long weekend on the streets and highways, watching for the four deadliest driving behaviours.
Police call them “The Big 4” — impaired driving, not using seatbelts, speeding and distracted driving.
“A great shift is when we don’t give tickets, and that means we didn’t see any kind of infraction,” said Cst. Phil Kane, Ottawa Police traffic enforcement unit. “Unfortunately, that never happens; we will always find something.”
While there will no doubt be some last-minute errands to be run, to make Thanksgiving dinner just perfect, police want drivers to keep their focus where it belongs: on the road.
“If you combine distracted driving with being late — so now you’re speeding — you may have not buckled up because you’re in a rush; it’s a recipe for disaster,” Cst. Kane told 1310 NEWS.
Operation Impact is a national traffic safety campaign involving Ottawa Police, as well as the OPP, police services in Quebec and across the country. Cst. Kane says traffic enforcement officers plan to be out on the roads all weekend.
“We’re going to be in the spots you expect us, and we’re going to be in the spots you don’t expect us.”
