Less spooky weather for Halloween

OTTAWA — The only thing scary about this evening should be the costumes and Halloween decorations, not the weather, after record-breaking rainfall and flooding.

Showers — and even wet flurries — are possible through the day, but the precipitation should end in time for tirck-or-treating.

“The kids may need some extra layers underneath the costume,” said Jill Taylor, 1310 NEWS meteorologist. “They’ll want to dress for temperatures near five degrees, but with the wind — even though it will diminish — it’ll feel more like one (degree).”

A different story from just 24 hours ago, when more than 100 millimetres of rain fell on the capital, overwhelming sewers, flooding streets and parking lots, washing out culverts, and even prompting the voluntary evacuation of a mobile home park in Gatineau.

Parc Riviera was voluntarily evacuated of 48 people, Monday, after rain and runoff caused an access road to begin to crumble. The road was repaired and everyone was able to return home.

The Ville de Gatineau says a total of 95 people registered at an evacuation centre during the storm. Evacuees returned home and the centre was closed, Monday evening.

Floodwaters have receded and roads re-opened on both sides of the river, but many are now dealing with the cleanup from flooded basements.

Gatineau city officials say they received 295 calls for backed-up sewers during the storm.
