Police warn of job offer scam making the rounds

Fraud unit investigators are out with a warning about a “job offer” scam making the rounds.

Ottawa Police say people who respond to these bogus job offers, usually through an unsolicited email or job ad are told they’ve been hired, and are sent payment by cheque or e-transfer. However, they’re then told to send a portion of those funds somewhere else, such as another bank account, or, by purchasing gift cards.

After that money’s been sent on, police say that’s when the fraud victim is told by their bank, that the original money transfer was fake and their account is overdrawn or frozen.

Police remind you to never send money to anyone you don’t know or trust.

If you’ve been caught in a scam like this or similar, report it to Ottawa Police.
