Ottawa in compliance with Ontario’s long-term care order

The City of Ottawa’s long term care homes are now in compliance with a director’s order issued through the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care.

The order, issued in July of last year, is a rarely-used “blanket order” for facilities in “chronic non-compliance.”

It was in response to a string of reports of abuse and neglect involving city-run care homes, as well as non-reporting of incidents by staff.

The city undertook a series of measures that included stakeholder meetings with families, residents, and staff.

In November, an independent 3rd party review involved 16 visits to the city’s care homes followed by enhanced staff training and additional management presence during shifts.

A wrap up report on the findings and actions taken is expected by the end of April.
