Ottawa Police, OPP offer gun amnesty

Police across Ontario are collecting unwanted and unlicenced firearms, next month, to try to prevent them ending up in the hands of criminals.
Ottawa Police are helping support the amnesty, led by the OPP, to collect firearms, ammunition and accessories during the month of April. The goal of the amnesty is to prevent the guns being stolen in residential break-ins.
While historically the majority of crime guns were smuggled into our country from the U.S., police and crime experts say the guns seized by police in Canada are now split about 50-50 between guns that originated from the U.S. and guns that were stolen from legal gun owners in Canada.
Ottawa residents who want to surrender a firearm are asked to contact Ottawa Police at (613) 236-1222, extension 7300, to register their address. Police will arrange a time to come and collect the gun.
Police say do not bring your firearm into a police station.
