uOttawa to feature new marijuana law courses

By Mike Vlasveld

Canada's first ever cannabis law courses are going to be offered at the University of Ottawa this fall.

Dean of Law at uOttawa Adam Dodek told The Rick Gibbons Show, students will be learning about the broad-based nature of the regulation and legalization of cannabis, looking at both the recreational and medical streams. In two courses, pupils will study legal implications surrounding cannabis production and owning a legal cannabis-related business, as well as the responsibilities of employers dealing with employees who might come to work high or need to smoke the drug for medical purposes.

“We also, to the extent that we are able to, really promote experiential learning,” said Dodek. “So the chance for students — they're not going to be consuming cannabis in Smiths Falls — but they'll get the chance to see the [manufacturing] operations and get an understanding of some of the legal issues in the production of cannabis both for medical and recreational use, down in Smiths Falls.”

The Dean of Law added that the interesting part of teaching these courses is going to be that the government and industry are going to be learning from each other, forming and changing new regulations, as the courses are being taught.

It will be up to the professors and new lawyers to stay on top of it all.
