Here’s what’s up on International Astronomy Day

By Saif Kaisar

International Astronomy Day is this Saturday, April 21.

The Ottawa Center of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada will have telescopes set up outside the Space and Aviation Museum with views of the Sun, Moon, and possibly Venus.

The event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with several telescopes available for patrons to observe through.

“The Public Star Party” will run from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. outside the Space and Aviation Museum.

Gary Boyle, “The Backyard Astronomer,” told 1310NEWS that “through-out the year Jupiter does rise early,” stating that there is a chance for observers to see the planet this Saturday. “Seeing astronomical objects other than the moon, during the day, is always a treat and it's pretty rare,” Boyle added.

The Ottawa Valley Astronomy and Observers Group is presenting a free outdoor family event, to run from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday.

The event will be held on 2401 City Park Dr., in the Chapters parking lot, and includes:

– Free public viewing session.
– Meet local amateur astronomers and learn about the wonders of the night sky.
– See telescopes of many different sizes and types, and find out how they work.
– Observe the Sun (safely) during the day.
– Check out the Moon, Venus and more at night.
– Astrophotography and video-imaging.
– Displays and free informative handouts.

No rain is expected this weekend.
