Six people displaced by east end fire

By Alex Black

A fire fighter had to be treated for heat exhaustion after a fire in the east end.

Around 7:15 p.m., crews responded to a 911 call for heavy black smoke coming from 121 Destiny Private in Orleans, one unit of a six-unit row complex.

The deck was on fire when crews arrived on the scene and a working fire was declared at 7:20 p.m.

The fire, which had started on the deck of the unit, had extended into the roof and attic area.

The fire was upgraded to a two alarm a few minutes after crews arrived.

The fire, which was brought under control around 7:40 p.m., caused extensive damage to the unit.

The neighbouring unit — 123 Destiny Private — also sustained some smoke damage.

Damage is pegged at $500,000 to the two units.

Victim Services was called to help three people from unit 121, aged seven, 36 and 42, as well as three people from unit 123, aged 25, 26 and 65.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
