Meat of 417 moose given to Algonquins of Ontario

The meat of the moose that caused major traffic disruptions on the 417 Thursday morning has been donated to some less fortunate families in the community of the Algonquins of Ontario.

The moose had wandered onto the eastbound lanes of Highway 417, between Bayshore and Pinecrest, Thursday morning.

Vehicles were parked around the animal on the eastbound shoulder to contain it until the Ministry of Natural Resources could arrive.

There were plans to tranquilize the moose, but it had to be euthanized instead.

The Algonquins of Ontario represent 10 communities west of the Ottawa river, they will receive the moose meat.

Anytime a larger animal has been killed, and their meat is still harvestable, the Ministry of Natural Resources will reach out to the Algonquins of Ontario to donate it.

The meat will be passed around the community, and given to elders and people who may not be able to harvest their own meat on a regular basis.
