Several STO buses still grounded due to power steering issues

By Jeff Slack

Gatineau transit riders are experiencing delays as STO pulled 57 of its buses off the road, due to technical issues.

The Gatineau Transit Authority moved fast to take 57 of its 345 buses off the road, to deal with a connector placement issue within the buses' power steering.

“[The connector placement] makes it susceptible to water, which causes corrosion and weakens the connection,” Sophie St-Pierre, Assistant Director for STO, told 1310 NEWS.

Nova Bus discovered the fault and informed STO that it needed to initiate emergency inspections.

The elimination of 57 buses puts a strain on the local trasit system, as riders face delays and cancellations.

“We need every one of [our buses] to be on the road, or everything we can get on the road,” St-Pierre added. “We have [seen] growth in our transit system, so a lot of people are using the buses.”

The inspection takes a half-hour to complete, with St-Pierre saying 34 of the 57 buses have already passed and are back on the roads.

The transit authority is hoping to have more completed by Monday to deal with the morning rush.
