Charges laid in Barrhaven robbery and carjacking

By Mike Vlasveld

The Ottawa Police Service has charged a 31-year-old man following an investigation into a robbery and carjacking on Strandherd Drive, just east of Longfields Drive.

Officers say a man walked into a retail store carrying a duffle bag on May 4, around 2:25 p.m., and started filling the bag with merchandise. Employees and customers confronted the suspect. He then punched one person and tried to punch another before running out of the store.

The suspect then jumped into an occupied, parked car, pulled out a knife and threatened the occupants, telling them to drive away. After driving a ways, the suspect told the occupants to get out of the vehicle. They were not injured.

A police investigation linked the suspect to two other incidents along Strandherd Drive:

  • A shoplifting incident on April 14
  • A retail robbery on April 20

Josh Pearsall, 31, of Ottawa, has been charged with:

  • Theft Under $5,000
  • Robbery
  • Robbery with a weapon (3 counts)
  • Assault
  • Flight from Police
  • Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle
  • Carry Concealed weapon
  • Extortion
  • Breach of Probation (2 counts)

Pearsall is scheduled to appear in show cause court Tuesday.
