The Ottawa Public Library (OPL) isn't just about books and quiet spaces – it's also about making music.
The OPL Musical Instrument Lending Library has expanded to include four local branches thank to donations from Sun Life Financial.
The program is available at the Main branch in downtown Ottawa, Centrepointe in Nepean and as of this week, the Cumberland and Greenboro locations of the OPL.
The chair of the Ottawa Public Library Board, Tim Tierney explained that there are a variety of instruments to choose from when looking at the list.
“There's actually a whole series from woodwind instruments, we have guitars with amplifiers if you want (it) electrified,” he explained. “We've got bongos, we've got xylophones. You think of the instrument and you can find it at our library.”
Tierney noted that this is an ideal program for parents who have children interested in learning an instrument who are worried they may lose interest after they've already spent the money.
In addition to borrowing instruments, you will also have access to self-instruction books and online music lessons.
Councillor Tierney explained that he'd like to see this program expand to more library branches across the city as the library isn't just a place for books anymore.
“We're way more than books! We're places and spaces for 3D printing,” Tierney said. “We're a learning and artistic hub for the community.”
