According to a report published by Research Infosource Inc., the CHEO Research Institute ranks 25th nationally and 10th provincially, on the list of Canada’s Top 40 Research Hospitals in 2019.
The results are based on the hospital’s 2018 research income of more than $24 million. CHEO researchers, who compete for public funding to fuel more than 600 current studies across the hospital, also rely on community donations.
For Dr. Jason Berman, the CEO and Scientific Director of the CHEO Research Institute, vice-president of research at CHEO and a pediatric oncologist, the hospital’s latest position on the list is just the tip of the iceberg.
“I’m very proud of our ranking, but it’s just one benchmark of success. What really motivates us is the impact of our research for patients and their families. In the coming years, we will continue to increase our research productivity to realize our full potential,” says Dr. Berman.
Last year, CHEO’s research involved 75,000 children, youth and families, the study of several rare diseases, groundbreaking mental health work, as well as new therapies for childhood cancer and genomic innovation.
“CHEO has established a solid foundation for research to complement its clinical prowess,” says Ron Freedman, CEO of Research Infosource Inc.
The report highlights that Ontario’s hospitals, 19 in the top 40, are leaders in health research investment, which is a key indicator in defining the province as a competitive center of health research and innovation, both nationally and globally.
