More Ottawa event cancellations as city attempts to limit spread of COVID-19

By Dani-Elle Dubé

As the city does its best to limit the spread of COVID-19 in the community, more local entertainment hubs and organizations continue to cancel events.

Among the latest announcements are from Ottawa Symphony Orchestra, Centrepointe Theatre and the Canadian Blood Services.

The orchestra has made the decision to cancel both their March 30 and May 4 concerts.

The company says it will be in touch with subscription and single ticket holders by email or phone regarding their options.

“Cancelling concerts is not a decision we take lightly but one that we hope you agree, we make in everyone's best interest,” the statement said.

Because rescheduling these concerts would be difficult, the Ottawa Symphony says they'll be providing ticket holders with options to either donate the cost of their ticket, exchange for a future concert or to request a refund.

The Meridian Theatre at Centrepointe announced on its Facebook Saturday that it, too, will be closing its doors from March 16 to April 5.

Anyone with tickets to a show during that time will be contacted directly with information and instructions on how refunds will be issued.

The weekend performances for the 9th Hour Theatre Company's production of Halo, however, is still a go as scheduled. However, refunds are available if people wish not to attend and are asked to contact the box office at 613-580-2700.

Effective as of Friday, the Canadian Blood Services has suspended all buccal swabbing events across the country and are asking the public to register online to get their swab kit delivered in the mail as an alternative.

“The safety of registrants and their families is of utmost importance to us,” a Canadian Blood Services statement said. “We will be re-assessing this decision in 30 days.”

The stem cell registry will continue to coordinate searches in Canada as the service monitors the COVID-19 situation.

Also suspended by Canadian Blood Services is their Your Type events across Canada, which invite people to find out their blood types. These events are often held in public spaces like shopping malls.

The Archbishop of Ottawa has cancelled all weekend masses for all Roman Catholic churches.

And while the Royal Canadian Mint continues to develop and manufacture products, all tours have been suspended and boutiques closed.

The Ottawa Vintage Clothing Show is also among cancellations.
