Ottawa Fire Services received an early morning call from a passerby about flames coming from a second-floor balcony of a multi-unit building in Sandy Hill.
When crews arrived at 261 Somerset Street East shortly after 2 a.m. Monday, the fire had already spread to the third floor and roof.
At that time, firefighters declared a two-alarm blaze.
An OC Transpo bus had to be called to shelter the occupants of the affected unit, as well as neighbouring homes. No one was injured.
The Red Cross and Salvation Army will both be helping those affected by the incident.
