Mayor Watson celebrating completion of Elgin Street renewal project

The Elgin Street renewal project has been completed on time.

While the road fully reopened to traffic in the summer of 2020, the finishing touches including public art installations, furniture placement, tree planting and other landscaping features, have now been completed.

“We're so excited to celebrate the completion of Elgin Street,” said Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson. “The underground infrastructure was over 100 years old and we've seen a significant transformation take place since 2018.”

“I'd like to take this opportunity to acknowledge everyone, form local businesses and residents, to city council, city staff and the workers who made this project a success,” said Somerset Ward councillor Catherine Mckenney. “And I want to remind you to come down and support our local independent businesses who count on you to keep Elgin a great traditional main street.”

The almost $40 million renovation of Elgin Street began in March of 2018 and includes wider sidewalks, shared use lanes for cycling and vehicles and transit facilities, as well as traffic calming measures and reduced speed limits.
