Every December for the past 30 years, a vigil has been held to remember the 14 women who were murdered during the mass shooting at l’Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal — but this year, like much of everything else, it has had to move online.
This year will mark the 31st anniversary of the shooting which happened on December 6, 1989, which will focus on the connections between violence against women, gender-based violence ad state violence against Black, Indigenous and people of colour.
“The killings of December 6, 1989 should not be forgotten, and neither should the many lives o those in the BIPOC community including Abdirahman Abdi, Anthony Aust, Chantel Moore, Regis Korchinski-Paquet and Joyce Echaquan,” a statement from organizers said. “Action is necessary to prevent further harm, trauma and deaths within our community.”
The event is organized by the Women’s Event Network, a coalition of women organization and individuals who come together to organize three major campaigns every year, brings forward the issue the stop violence against women is a public responsibility.
The vigil can be watched on Facebook or on Youtube at 6 p.m. on Sunday, December 6.
