Nepean’s Valley Stream Retirement home reports 10 COVID-19 deaths during outbreak

Ten residents of an Ottawa Revera retirement home in the west end have died from COVID-19, the home has confirmed.

Ottawa Public Health has also reported that 51 residents of Valley Stream Retirement Residence in Nepean have tested positive for the virus since the home’s outbreak, which started on January 2 — and of these, 13 resident cases have since resolved.

Revera released a statement confirming the cases Thursday.

The home is located on Valley Stream Drive, near Baseline and Cedarview roads.

“We regret to confirm that 10 residents have passed away with COVID-19 during the outbreak,” Dr. Rhonda Collins, chief medical officer of Revera said in a statement. “The team at Valley Streams offers its most sincere condolences to the families and friends of the residents who passed away.”

OPH also confirmed that 27 employees have tested positive for the virus — 10 of which have since resolved. The remaining staff members are at home in self-isolation.

“We are working closely with Ottawa Public Health officials to maintain pandemic outbreak protocols and infection control practice,” Collins said. “All residents are monitored closely for symptoms twice daily and are tested if they present any potential signs or symptoms of the virus.”

All staff are screened at the start and end of their shifts. They are also required to wear an appropriate mask and eye protection while in the home.

All employees were tested on January 19.

Residents of the home have been asked to self-isolated in their rooms until the outbreak has been declared over.

Meals are served in resident rooms with supervision, and with assistance as needed.

However, to “maintain stimulation and social engagement” during this time of isolation, the home says individual recreation activities continue.

“We recognize how difficult these measures are for residents and their families and we appreciate their patience and understanding as we put these precautions in place for the safety of out residents,” Collins said.
