It’s been a busy 24-hour period for firefighters in Ottawa, as teams tackled three more fires in the city overnight — on top of three the night before.
The first call to the department came in at 7:37 p.m. from a resident in the 0-100 block of Valencia Street, in Nepean. They told dispatchers that an electric scooter was on fire inside the attached garage.
When they got there, crews found “heavy black and brown smoke” coming from the open garage. Bringing a hose inside, they were able to move the scooter to the driveway, where they extinguished the flames.
Most modern e-scooters have lithium-ion batteries, which are a problem for fire officials who have been responding to over a dozen fires started by the batteries.
“Due to the quick response and fast attack, the fire was declared under control at 7:47 p.m., four minutes after firefighters arrived on scene and before the flames could spread to the garage,” the release reads.
Just after 12:14 a.m., a caller reported the second fire that was developing in a townhome in the eastern part of the city.
When they got to the house, teams saw smoke coming from the second-storey window. They were met outside by a resident who said they were the only one home at the time.
“Importantly, the resident was woken up and alerted to the fire by a working smoke alarm,” firefighters noted.
Bringing a line inside the house, another crew searched the rest of the building. They were met with heavy smoke and found the flames in the bedroom, which were extinguished before spreading further.
The resident is displaced due to the incident, and a fire investigator was dispatched.
Hours later, at 3:56 a.m., crews were called for another bedroom fire, this time in an apartment above a commercial complex on Merivale Road.
When firefighters arrived, smoke and flames were coming from the windows. One person was outside to greet crews and said they were the only one home.
Attacking the flames, the team went through a window before being able to get inside to douse the fire.
It was under control by 4:24 a.m., and concludes the second overnight shift in the city where crews battled three fires.
