Queensway Carleton Hospital (QCH) is set to begin rebuilding and expanding its mental health unit this spring, thanks to $9-million and an approval from the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care.
The hospital says, Friday, March 5, that two existing departments will be renovated and a new two-storey addition will be built.
The redevelopment includes additional inpatient beds and expanded outpatient mental health services as well, resulting in faster access to care in Ottawa.
“By rebuilding our mental health unit, we can provide more people in our community with the care they need and improve the patient experience,” says Dr. Andrew Falconer, President and CEO of QCH. “Mental health supports for this community are more important than ever.”
The hospital's Hopes Rising campaign helped raise $6-million for the project.
Construction for the project is expected to start this spring and finish sometime in 2023.
The renovated mental health unit will also include a secure outdoor courtyard for patients, additional spaces for group support, an area for exercise and a comfort room for patients to use when they need it.
QCH's mental health program provides intensive and acute mental health inpatient beds, 24/7 emergency consultations, outpatient assessment and treatment, a recovery-oriented group-based day treatment program, and an outreach clinic that provides telemedicine clinics to Arnprior Regional Health and Carleton Place District and Memorial Hospital.
