Watchdog investigating as Montreal woman found dead after wellness checks by police

MONTREAL — Quebec’s police watchdog says it is investigating after a woman — who was the subject of five wellness checks by Montreal police — was found dead.
The body of the 65-year-old woman was discovered in her home on Feb. 17.
The watchdog, known as the BEI, says a relative who had not heard from the woman called police on Jan. 21 and asked them to check on her.
The BEI says police went to the woman’s residence, where she told them she was voluntarily self-isolating because she was afraid of getting COVID-19.
Police were called to the home on Feb. 8, Feb. 12 and Feb. 16, each time receiving no response.
According to the BEI, police found nothing suspicious and spoke to neighbours on at least two of those occasions.
On Feb. 17, after another call, police entered the home and found the woman’s body.
