The Ottawa Mission teams up with H&R Block to file tax returns for homeless

By Victoria Williston

H&R Block Canada has teamed up with The Ottawa Mission to help their clients and others with their taxes, and the accounting giant is doing it all for free.

Since the program was launched five years ago, H&R Block says it has filed thousands of tax returns for those experiencing homeless, or for those living in an emergency shelter, with a total of $1.49-million in refunds and tax credits.

The company says those who qualify for credits usually get around $1,000 back through different programs, which can help lift someone out of poverty.

An address is needed to file taxes with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), so The Ottawa Mission provides a mailing address for those who wish to file their taxes.

In addition to Ottawa, H&R Block tax experts will be providing free tax filing support in 11 cities across Canada including Vancouver, Kamloops, Red Deer, Calgary, Medicine Hat, Regina, Winnipeg, Toronto, Markham, Montreal, and St. John’s.

The tax program with The Ottawa Mission runs virtually until Sunday.

Free tax clinics for those who are eligible are available through the CRA website.
