Neighbour’s call to police leads to arrests in Kanata high-end vehicle theft

By Mike Vlasveld

Three young men and a young offender are facing charges related to vehicle theft after someone spotted suspicious early-morning activity in a Kanata neighbourhood and called police.

Ottawa police say the caller noticed a man trying to break into his neighbour's Toyota Highlander, around 3:30 a.m., on Monday, March 22.

One of the responding officers noticed a matching vehicle driving away from the initial call location and attempted to intercept it. Police say the driver refused to stop, and led officers on a short chase. At one point, the vehicle came to an abrupt stop in the middle of road and the suspects fled on foot.

Officers, with help from the K9 Unit, were able to established containment and search the area.

A second suspicious vehicle was intercepted later, and officers say they found the original theft suspect in the back hatch. Everyone else in the vehicle was also arrested.

Ala Zadi, 23, and Christopher Resolus, 21, both from Laval, Quebec, as well as Marc-Henri Nimy Bazinga Ngimbi, 18, and a young offender, both from Montreal, Quebec, have been charged with:

  • Theft of motor vehicle
  • Conspiracy to commit and indictable offence
  • Prowling at night
  • Mischief under $5,000
  • Mischief tampering with computer data
  • Possession of an auto master-key
  • Possession of a device to obtain computer service
  • Possession of break and enter tools

Resolus was further charged with fleeing from Police.

Zadi, Resolus and Nimy Bazinga Ngimbi are scheduled to appear in court, Tuesday. The young offender was released by undertaking with conditions.

Investigators would like to remind residents to take precaution in order to protect their vehicle. Any Lexus/Toyota SUV owners that notice new or fresh damage to the driver’s side door handle or observe someone taking photos of their dashboard Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), are asked to report it to the Ottawa Police Service.
