One new COVID-19 death in Ottawa, 64 cases and two new community outbreaks

Ottawa Public Health (OPH) is reporting another death due to COVID-19 in the city, while it confirms 64 new cases of the virus and a few new local outbreaks.

The novel coronavirus has killed 457 people in Ottawa, as of Tuesday, March 23.

The University of Ottawa Heart Institute is among the latest institutions added to OPH's outbreak dashboard. It's seen three patients and two staff members contract the virus since March 21. It's the 25th healthcare institution in the city to be currently dealing with a COVID-19 outbreak.

OPH says nine schools and three childcare centres are also handling COVID-19 outbreaks, while it tracks five outbreaks in the community. The community outbreaks are linked to one multi-unit dwelling and four workplaces (one construction, one healthcare-related, one restaurant and one warehouse).

COVID-19 numbers in local hospitals remain fairly stable, as 25 people are being treated for the virus, Tuesday — four of whom are in intensive care.

Indicators of COVID-19 transmission in the community remain nearly unchanged from Monday, as the weekly incidence rate is 55 per 100,000 and the positivity rate among residents being tested for the virus is still 3.9 per cent.

OPH knows of 755 active cases of COVID-19 in Ottawa.

There have been 16,252 lab-confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus in Canada's capital since March 2020, of which 15,040 have been resolved.

The City of Ottawa has not reported another shipment of COVID-19 vaccines since March 15, when it hit 97,170 received to date. There have been 92,293 doses of COVID-19 vaccine administered in the city since December 2020. OPH typically updates local vaccine numbers on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Ontario is reporting 1,546 new cases of COVID-19, Tuesday, including 15 in the Eastern Ontario Health Unit region, 13 in the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark district and none in Renfrew County (actually, the province subtracted one case from that area's overall count).
